Advertised prop guns are typically not actual weapons - but the "look" of an authentic weapon. Even so, if handled in an unsafe manner, they can cause serious harm. For example, props used in combat scenes with gunfire should only fire blanks or special paint ammunition that does not leave any residue on the target or person involved - particularly when stuntmen are very close.
Prop Guns: Their Role In Movies
Doing any research on Hollywood? You'll find that prop guns are one of the most common weapons seen in movies.
In movies, we see many props guns used to make a scene more dramatic rather than just saying "I'm going to blow you away" or pointing a gun at someone. However, some props are fake and don't actually fire anything. Some of them can do serious damage to the actors and even cause death!
Many films, especially those made in America, have been known to include fake guns, often as props and sometimes used by actors. Some films utilize fake guns as an avoidance of gun violence on film: "The Fifth Estate" directed by Bill Condon said the use of a prop gun allowed the film to be documentary-style and not focus on any specific person or persons.
Features Of Prop Guns
Prop guns or blank guns are used for many things: to supplement the production of movies and theater, as novelty items, as children's toys. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There is no consistency to the features of prop guns because they need to fulfill different purposes depending on their use or design.
Prop Guns Come In Following Types:
Single-Shot Props
Single-Shot Prop guns are designed for one purpose, and that is to shoot. Most of the single-shot props are metal or plastic, with automatic ejection, and also have a trigger on them to make it even more realistic.
These guns are usually made from metal tubing or plastic because they are durable and realistic. Plastic props can be very fragile, so metal is better because it does not crack as easy. Metal props can also be painted black to make them look even better.
Most single-shot prop guns have some sort of plastic or metal scope on them to make it look even more realistic, and also to add visual appeal. The barrel of the gun is usually smooth or rifled depending on the kind of gun.
Semi-Automatic Props
Semi-Automatic Prop guns are designed for one purpose, to fire rapidly. Semi-automatic props come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but they all have one thing in common: at least two firing mechanisms.
Most semi-automatic prop guns are made from wood because wood props are the most realistic looking, durable and cheap. Wood props can be painted black or another color to make them look even better.
The firing mechanisms on semi-automatic prop guns are usually fashioned to look like the actual mechanisms in real semi-automatic or automatic guns. Most semi-automatic props have barrels that are smooth, but they can have rifling as well.
Revolver Props
Revolver Prop guns are designed for one purpose and that is to fire a succession of projectiles at one time. Revolver props come in several different sizes and shapes, some even look like they have moving parts which is quite realistic.
Revolver prop guns are usually made from wood or plastic because they have moving parts and usually don't need to look as realistic as other props types do. Wood props can be painted black or another color to make them look even better.
Prop Guns Are Dangerous?
A fake gun is a safe and easy way to conceal a weapon. They do not fire real bullets that can cause injury. This is not a problem since these guns are just made for use in movies and training animals. It is also possible to use them for self-defense.
