You might think ninjas were just cool, but they were deadly too. The word "ninja" is thought to derive from the Japanese words for "to hide" and "person," which, along with their use of disguises and expert marksmanship, made them a very powerful weapon in feudal Japan's tumultuous political climate.
The Ninjas' Special Skills
Disguise. The best way to get close to an enemy was to pretend you're not a ninja at all. That's why ninjas dressed up in all kinds of crazy costumes—either blending in with the surrounding population or using their disguises to hide among warriors. Depending on the situation, ninjas would disguise themselves as peasants, servants, or monks. They could also wear masks and other ways to hide their faces. They also use a variety of ninja weapons and techniques for their purposes.
A Brief Guide About Ninja Weapons
Ninja weapons are the tools and weapons ninja use in their line of work. The purpose of these weapons is to fulfill very specific needs and to take out opponents who don't want to engage in direct combat. Some would say that the weapons are purely ornamental, yet it is very difficult to justify this in the sense that they would often do more damage than a sword.
These weapons and tools can be
classified into two categories:
(1) Weapons for solo use; and (2) Weapons needed in group work. The weapons in Group 1 are usually considered to be an extension of the body, due to their small size and unfussy handling. Their effectiveness, however, is actually based on supply and demand. The ninja weapons appear in a variety of shapes and forms making them very versatile for individual needs. The weapons in Group 2 are either too large to carry alone or were meant for group use. For instance, walking sticks were used to walk through mountains or forests without leaving any traces of one's presence. Then, there were tools such as grappling hooks, rope ladders and drums that were used in the investigation of a building before entering it.
Shuriken
The shuriken is a traditional Japanese throwing weapon consisting of a small plate-like disk joined to the edge of a wooden stick.
Invented in ancient times, it is still used as an offensive or defensive ninja weapon in martial arts such as Kenjutsu and Ninjutsu. In modern usage, the shuriken retains its original role but often has razor-sharp edges so that it can be thrown with high velocity to slash at opponents.
Shuriken (Japanese: 剣; literally "sword"), also called kama (Japanese: かま; literally "spear"), are small throwing weapons that are composed of a few parts. Originally used by the ancient Japanese samurai (warrior) class, they could be made to look like various other objects.
Ninja Swords
It's easy to see how ninjas have captured the imagination of so many people. Though they are only a myth, these cunning warriors are iconic representations of stealth, cunning, wisdom and martial arts. To honor their legacy is to learn about them and what better way to explore these concepts than through their trademark weapon?
Throughout history, there have been many different types of ninja weapons used in combat. Though there are many that have stood the test of time, some are more notable than others. One weapon that comes to mind is the ninja sword. These swords are linear ninja weapons that require the user to be face-to-face with their opponent, making them short-ranged weapons. Though this may seem like a disadvantage, swords have been made versatile enough to defend against medieval armor and used effectively in multiple situations. Since then, swords have been crafted from different materials and have been used by many different people. In Japanese history, one thing all professional warriors shared in common was a high level of skill in the art of weaponry.
Katana Swords
Katana swords originated in Japan during the late 12th century. The sword saw used for over a thousand years and is one of the most popular traditional samurai swords in Japan. This ninja weapon has been used by many people including some famous people who used this type of swords such as Miyamoto Musashi, Sasuke Sarutobi, and Yoshitsune Minamoto.
The katana was based on the Chinese straight sword and originated in the Kamakura period. Japan's history of swords goes back centuries to between 700 and 300 B.C.E, just before people began to use iron for swords and armor. The Japanese swords of this time had a very different shape than what we think of like a Japanese sword today; they were straight-edged with a slight curve and had two large holes running through them and were very ornate and used almost like badges of honor rather than actual weapons.
Importance of Ninja Weapons
Throughout the history of Japan, ninjas have always been associated with weapons. Naturally, they are one of the most important parts of a ninja's life. There are many popular ninja weapons that have been used for generations. These are sharp, shard shaped projectiles that were made from various materials depending on the circumstances.
